WheelMates patch notes
Demo handling, DLSS, Next Fest Deck tools, the August demo close, and launch — no numbered post-launch patch yet.
This is the dated patch list for WheelMates, not a second copy of the Updates Hub. Firevolt released the two-player RC co-op on 1 September 2026 for Steam PC and Steam Deck. Almost every handling change you feel in the live build arrived during the public demo season: May physics passes, a June connection and DLSS note, the Next Fest quality drop, a closed Backyard playtest, then the 3 August demo close. No numbered post-launch patch has been announced yet. If a social post claims “1.0.1” without a Steam news item, it is a rumor. Store questions (price, Friend’s Pass, length) stay on the Launch FAQ.
The public demo opened on 6 May 2026 with the Kitchen and Garage after a closed playtest. Testers had asked for more space; Firevolt added the Garage. Online co-op and local split-screen both existed in that build. Everything below is what changed after that door opened.
8 May 2026 — First public demo polish
Two days after the demo went live, Firevolt shipped a feel-and-clarity pass. It is the patch that made the cars less of a slapstick toy and more of a puzzle chassis.
- Less sudden acceleration, so a tap of throttle was less likely to launch you off a chopping board.
- Reduced drift, so lining up on a button did not turn into a slide show.
- More linear turning, which is the change people felt as “the car finally points where I point.”
- DualSense button icons in the UI, for people who already plug a PlayStation pad into Steam.
- Collision fixes, the unglamorous work that stops a wheel from eating a table leg.
- Hookshot / winch made easier. If rope points felt like a coin toss in the first 48 hours, this is why later clips look cleaner. See rope swing.
- Magnet grab restored to toggle. Early in the demo it had drifted toward a hold-to-aim feel. Toggle is the intended verb: on, carry, off. If your muscle memory still holds the trigger, that is a leftover from day one. Magnet grab assumes toggle.
- Italian language fix.
- Minor puzzle updates in the demo rooms.
If a friend still plays as if grab is hold-to-aim, they are on the wrong habit, not the wrong GPU.
Mid-May / 13 May 2026 — Bigger handling and physics pass
A second, larger physics pass landed around 13 May. This is the one the Updates Hub summarizes as faster steering, less brake on throttle release, and better wall slides. It is also the pass that made magnetic wheels feel like driving instead of like climbing with the handbrake on.
Steering sped up. Lifting off the throttle no longer dumped as much fake brake into the chassis, which is why demo reviews after mid-May sound less like they are fighting a shopping trolley. Wall slides improved, which matters the moment you leave the floor. Air stunts and drifts showed up in the reworked physics as toys, not as a scoring system. If your launch-night car feels snappy, you are feeling this pass, not a secret day-one 2026 patch that Firevolt has not posted.
~10 June 2026 — Connection Stability and DLSS
Around 10 June, Steam news carried a Connection Stability and DLSS Improvements note. That is the online-and-image patch, not another handling rewrite. Demo players had reported desync: cars in different places, puzzle states firing out of order. A stability pass is how a two-station crane stops solving itself on one screen and locking on the other.
DLSS is the NVIDIA upscaler path for desktop GPUs that support it. It is not a Steam Deck magic button, and it is not a reason to ignore system requirements. If you are on an AMD card, this note does not invent FSR for you. If you are on Deck, use the handheld checklist on Steam Deck rather than hunting a DLSS toggle that may not exist on that device.
15 June 2026 — Steam Next Fest demo
The Next Fest build was a quality pass on the same Kitchen-and-Garage demo, not a new campaign. Four things from that drop still matter in the full game:
- Steam Deck support went in. Firevolt’s official line is that handheld is supported. The store compatibility field can still read Unknown; demo comments on IGN’s overview said it did not run well for everyone. Honest Deck notes live on Steam Deck.
- Camera options: follow versus free. Early playtests leaned on a more manual right-stick camera. Follow is the default you want for driving. Free is for hunting a pipe. How to Play is the control page.
- Handling sliders, so the May physics changes could be tuned per pair instead of only per patch.
- The Journal, which collects story scraps about the missing professor. It is the collectible-and-lore tray the walkthrough and secrets pages keep pointing at.
Firevolt also talked more openly about Bloom’s whereabouts and motives during the fest. That is story context, not a patch byte, but it landed in the same week as the Journal.
26–28 June 2026 — Closed Backyard playtest
After Next Fest, Firevolt ran a closed Backyard playtest around 26–28 June. It was not a public demo depot. It was a limited test of the outdoor wing preview coverage already named: antennas, power, and a yard that is not a kitchen counter. This wiki will not invent which puzzles that playtest contained. Treat it as a date on the way to the full house, not as a public patch you can still download.
If you never got an invite, you missed nothing required for launch. The 1 September game is the Backyard you actually drive, not the closed weekend.
3 August 2026 — Demo closed
Firevolt closed the demo on 3 August 2026 to focus on the release build. That is why a library shortcut to the demo depot should be dead. Mixing an old demo folder with the full game is how people launch a handling build where magnet grab is still the wrong mode. Verify files. Install folder name remains RC Together; crash logs sit under C:/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/RC Together/CarGame/Saved/Logs.
The close also explains the August calendar: on 12 August the studio pulled launch forward from 7 September to 1 September 2026. Demo off, date moved, then ships.
1 September 2026 — Launch, and what is not a patch yet
Steam PC and Steam Deck. $19.99, 10% off through 15 September 2026. Friend’s Pass. 21 achievements. DirectX 12. About 6 hours for the story, about 8 with secrets and mini-games. Mandatory two-player co-op. Full launch FAQ: Launch FAQ.
No numbered post-launch patch has been announced yet. Say that out loud if someone asks for “the day-one hotfix list.” Day-one Steam news was the “WheelMates is OUT” note plus the store FAQ, not a 1.0.1 changelog. Handling you feel now is the May–June demo work listed above. When Firevolt posts a numbered patch, add it here as a new dated heading. Do not stuff rumor Discord messages into this timeline until they also appear as Steam news.
Studio Q&A said DLC is planned after launch. There is no date and no name. It is not a patch. It is not a reason to delay buying the 1 September build. Consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch) are a separate H1 2027 track on Consoles.
How to read this page
Use the Updates Hub for the announce-to-launch story (28 January, 6 May, date change, launch). Use this page when you need the actual feel-changes: toggle grab, DualSense icons, DLSS, Deck, Journal, demo close. Use How to Play when the car still feels wrong after you have read the May notes — sliders exist so you can finish the job a patch started.
Official posts live on Steam news and the studio Discord. This wiki paraphrases those posts. It is not a Firevolt channel. If a future note contradicts a line here, the Steam post wins.
