WheelMates on Steam Deck
Official support is real. The store badge is Unknown. Verify your unit before a six-hour session.
WheelMates launched on 1 September 2026 for Steam PC and Steam Deck. Handheld is a launch platform, not a 2027 consolation prize. Firevolt said Deck is supported in the 15 June 2026 Next Fest demo and again in the launch FAQ. That official sentence is real. The Steam store’s Deck compatibility field still reads Unknown. Demo players in IGN’s overview comments said the Next Fest build did not run well on Deck. This page holds those three facts in one place so you can decide whether your unit is a couch host or a backup screen.
If you need raw GPU numbers, use system requirements. If you need Friend’s Pass or a second controller, use co-op setup. If the sticks and camera are the problem, use How to Play. DirectX 12 is still the desktop rule. A Deck does not add a solo story. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Switch remain planned for the first half of 2027; they do not change what your handheld has to do tonight.
Official support versus the store listing
Firevolt’s support claim is the one this wiki repeats: Steam Deck is supported at launch. That is why the Launch FAQ treats Deck as a current SKU while consoles stay on a later calendar.
Steam’s own compatibility badge is slower. Unknown means Valve has not published a Verified, Playable, or Unsupported stamp for this title, not that Firevolt recanted. Do not read Unknown as “it will not boot.” Do not read Firevolt’s “supported” as “every Deck, every TDP, 60 fps in split-screen.” Verify your unit in the Kitchen before you promise a friend a six-hour session on a train.
Proton and SteamOS details are Valve’s layer. WheelMates is a DirectX 12 project whose install folder still uses the development name RC Together. Deck support here means Firevolt shipped a handheld-aware build with camera and handling options. It is not a promise that a Proton flag from another game will magically fix frame pacing in Professor Bloom’s cluttered shelves.
What demo players actually said
The Next Fest demo is the sourced handheld test. IGN’s overview comment threads included Deck owners who said it does not run well: heat, hitching, or a camera that fights the small screen in tight rooms. That is player report, not a lab chart. It is also not a reason to delete the game from a Deck library. It is a reason to lower extras, lock a follow camera, and treat the first Kitchen hour as a smoke test.
If your LCD Deck is louder than your partner’s desktop in the same room, that is data. If an OLED Deck at a modest TDP holds a stable picture, that is also data. This wiki will not invent fps tables or pretend every 64 GB unit behaves like a 1 TB OLED. Bring Kitchen clutter into view — shelves, chrome, particle extras — and decide. The Garage is a worse stress test because the volume is larger and rope swing hookshots punish a hitch more than floor driving does.
Settings that help on Deck
The 15 June 2026 Next Fest pass added the options you should actually use on a handheld. Later patches did not replace them.
- Follow camera first. Free camera is useful when you hunt a pipe or a ceiling magnet. It is expensive on a small screen when every 90-degree table turn also yaws the horizon. Start follow. Drop sensitivity until a counter corner does not whip the HUD. How to Play covers the same camera split for desktop; on Deck it is the difference between a readable session and motion sickness.
- Lower extras. Reflections, extra particles, and crowded post-process are the first cuts. You are driving toys across a kitchen, not chasing a cinematic trailer.
- Handling sliders. Next Fest shipped steering and camera sliders. Demo patches before that already reduced sudden acceleration, cut extra drift, and made turning more linear. If the car still feels like a shopping trolley, open the sliders before you blame SteamOS.
- TDP and fan. Pick a wattage you can hold for an hour, not a peak that thermal-throttles during a magnet climb. A quiet 12–15 W that stays smooth beats a 25 W spike that folds in the Garage rafters.
Docked Deck is closer to a living-room PC. Test docked and handheld separately. A docked 1080p session with extras up is not proof that the 800p handheld profile will survive two cars on magnetic wheels.
Hosting co-op from a Deck
You still need two players. A Deck does not spawn an AI partner. Local split-screen wants a second controller on the same unit; that is the couch mode that makes handheld a Switch-shaped box in 2026. Online co-op is a Deck plus a friend’s PC (or two Decks) with Friend’s Pass. Remote Play Together can stream from a desktop to a Deck guest when the handheld is the weak host.
Prefer native online if hookshots feel late. Prefer split-screen if Wi-Fi stutters. Prefer a desktop host if the Deck is already hot in the Kitchen. The session rules are on co-op setup. There is no in-game voice; Discord on a phone saves the Deck’s RAM and heat. Keyboard player two on a Deck is a worse idea than it is on a PC. Plug in a pad.
Broadband still matters when the partner is remote. A handheld on congested 2.4 GHz is a classic way to make magnet grab toggles look “random.” Use 5 GHz or a docked Ethernet adapter if you insist on hosting online from the couch.
Logs, crashes, and when to stop using handheld
Crash logs on a Windows copy sit under C:/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/RC Together/CarGame/Saved/Logs. On Deck the tokens are the same: RC Together, CarGame, Saved/Logs, inside the compatdata prefix Steam uses for the title. Attach the newest log on the official Discord rather than a photo of the SteamOS keyboard. Specs and the Windows path are repeated on system requirements.
Stop using the Deck as host when frames dip every time both cars magnetize a wall, when split-screen makes the follow camera unreadable, or when online desync is worse than on a desktop host. Finish the night on a PC that meets spec. The house has no timer. Swapping hosts is allowed. You are not failing a ranking season by moving to a desk.
Handheld is a valid way to play WheelMates in 2026. Official support is yes. The store badge is Unknown. Demo comments were mixed-to-poor. Verify your unit, follow the camera, lower extras, and keep a second human in the session. When the cars feel calm, leave this page and go drive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for two-player RC sessions.
Is WheelMates supported on Steam Deck?
Yes. Firevolt listed Deck support in the 15 June 2026 Next Fest demo and in the launch FAQ. Steam PC and Steam Deck released together on 1 September 2026.
Why does the Steam page say Deck compatibility is Unknown?
That is Valve's badge, not Firevolt taking support back. Unknown means no Verified or Playable stamp yet. Verify your own unit instead of waiting on the store icon.
Did the demo run well on Deck?
Not for everyone. IGN overview comments included Deck players who said it does not run well. Treat that as a warning to lower extras and test the Kitchen, not as a ban.
What settings should I use?
Follow camera, lower extras, sensible handling sliders, and a TDP you can hold for an hour. Details overlap with How to Play.
Can I host split-screen from a Deck?
Yes, with a second controller. You still need two humans. Friend's Pass and online setup live on co-op setup.
Where are crash logs on Deck?
Look for the RC Together / CarGame / Saved/Logs folder inside the game's prefix. The Windows path is on system requirements.
